I work nights, boy that puts a damper in my social life and I told Paul just to call me when he got close. I know Brendan was excited to see Samantha, he had been talking about it all week even though he had made a trek to Ohio the week before…Boy he puts his whole heart into things.
When he called, he was like fifteen minutes away and I needed all of that time to throw on some clothes and slap a little color on my face…I groaned when I checked myself the last time before he got to my house.
And when I opened the door for him to see him standing there with a big bright smile with a hand full of flowers I felt like everything was right with the world.
Kimberly always takes everything is a sign… We get shot at in DC, we should take it as a sign to go home; our car overheats, we should take it as a sign to not take that trip…As much as I have heard her preach “signs” I am not sure why I ignored my first. Paul was allergic to cats.
I took the flowers from him, gave him a kiss on the cheek and put them in water. And then escorted him out to onto our deck so he would stop sneezing. We hit it off and I could tell he was excited to see DC for the first time so I left Paul, Brendan, Kimberly and Samantha to talk while I finished getting dressed.
I really only had about three hours before everyone arrived but even though I was totally exhausted, I tried to hide it from everyone else and I didn’t to rain on their parade.
And exhausted would stay with me all day. Tired through the Museums, tired through the tour and I was especially tired as we walked all over Arlington National Cemetery. I had a few moments to shine, sitting outside the National Museum of History relaxing, Paul put his arm around me and I laid my head on his shoulder.
It was a sweet moment but as I looked up I could see Brendan and Kimberly chuckling. Of course I left it at that until I had Kimberly alone. “So what was the giggling about outside.” I questioned her.
“Well, we were just wondering how you two would…”She said and then trailed off.
“Would what?” I snapped, a little frustrated about being the butt of their jokes.
“You know, do it…? You both are transgender right? Not quite the parts that either of you are looking for right?” Kimberly answered.
Of course this only frustrated me a little more. “I am sure if it got to that point, love would figure out a way to make it work.” I huffed and then returned back to my date…The date my wife, son and his girlfriend were on at the same time.
And then it was over, I dropped the kids and Kim off at the house and brought Paul back to his hotel room, never once thinking that I was going there for anything other than let him get some sleep. We sat in my care for a few minutes talking and just like that, he leaned in and kissed me, not a lil peck like before, a real, honest-to-goodness, deep, passionate kiss. And much to my surprise, one that knocked my socks off.
He invited me in and I jumped on his bed as he excused himself to get dressed for bed. It was a very nice room, and it was a suite also, probably because he had his daughter staying with him. While he got dressed we exchanged some small talk before he came out of the bathroom wearing pajama bottoms and no shirt. Wow, Greek god came to mind, I could tell he must have worked out a lot to get his shape. “Aren’t you a cutie?” I said as he laid down beside me.
“You aren’t bad yourself Kendra.” He replied.
But I think it was at that point my brain shut down. I couldn’t think, I just kept hearing Kimberly in my head saying, “You know, do it…” echoing over and over again.
“But I really haven’t had much sleep, can we rest a minute…(yawn)…or two.”
“Sure, anything for you sweetheart.” Paul replied.
And I was out, out like a light, I think I didn’t wake up for a couple of hours. I stumbled out of bed searching for my purse and my breath mints.
“Are you up?” Paul asked, “Didn’t have the heart to wake you.”
I was embarrassed that I crashed on him, I was also disappointed in myself for being scared of him, Kim was right, even if you like someone a lot, it could get complicated.
“We should pick up Samantha, it’s getting late.” He said before he put on his jacket and held his and out to help me from the bed.
“Yes, you’re probably right.” I replied and we didn’t talk again until we got to my house where Samantha and Brendan were waiting outside. They seemed to be hitting it off way better than we were.
“Are you ready to go Sam?” Paul said as he drove alongside them.
At that point I thought we were pretty much done as a couple, I had been slow moving all day, then I took him back to his room and slept for most of the night, now we sat in the car in complete silence.
“Well, I better let you go, thanks for coming down.” I said kind of meekly as I started to get out of the car.
He grabbed my hand, “I had a great time Kendra, thank you for showing me around; I really like you.” He said before he pulled me in close and kissed me, wow.”
“Me too Paul, see you tomorrow?” I asked
“Bright and early, I’ll call you.”
And then I stumbled out of my car, fumbled with my keys and then fell onto my bed knowing I wouldn’t be getting a lot of sleep that night either.
